News Releases  Aboriginal Employment and Training Program

 Aboriginal small business is growing at a rate nine times faster than Canada's national average. Are you interested in taking charge of your working life, utilizing your knowledge and experience by starting your own business? Join thousands of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who are developing economic opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities.

Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Turtle Island Indigenous Education Corporation are working together to deliver educational programs that will help to develop social and economic opportunities with Aboriginal people.

We have received a grant for Aboriginal Training for Employment (ATEP) through the Canada - British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. They will pay course fees and transportation for all eligible participants. You are eligible if you are unemployed non EI clients; have not received EI inthe last 3 years or 5 years in the case of parental leave; or an employed person that lacks a high school diplomaor certification; have not participated in any other employment or training program during the same time as the ATEP. Participants must be willing to attend the course full-time and willing to enter into a 6 month employment contract in a business other than your own immediately following the Entrepreneur Development.

Participants, who do not qualify for the ATEP grant may pay for their own tuition, or contact your Band or Nation to see if you are eligible for funding. The fees are $5,500.00 for the 48 week program.

The Aboriginal Small Business and Entrepreneur Development Program is an intense 48-week program comprised of 12 week of full-time in-class instruction (9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday) followed by 36 weeks of professional support and coaching while starting your business.

The 12-week full-time in-class instruction includes:
Entrepreneur Development - What is small business all about? (2 weeks) Preparation for life and career change, Introduction to Business Financials, Record Keeping, Business and Intercultural Communications, Personal Skills, Research.

Business Viability: Is your business concept feasible? (2 weeks) Develop and define your business concept: research, analyze and assess the viability of your market, industry and team.

Business Plan development (8 weeks): You will write your own business plan: company description and goals, target market, marketing and sales, operations, financials, action plan and all accompanying research documents.

The 36 - week business start-up component includes:
Support and Coaching upon successful completion of your business plan, professional  support and coaching is provided while you start your company.

Spring Course begins May 3, 2010
